Most men just aren’t uncomfortable talking about skincare. Really, think about it. When was the last time you were at a bar or business meeting and the man next to you wanted to debate the merits of one skincare product over another instead of comparing the Giants and the Braves batting averages? It just isn’t done. But while it may not be talking about subject, more and more of them are actively taking care of their skin and using a lot of skincare products.
Before you rush out and start buying skincare products, though, you need to know what type of skin you have. Men’s skin types are: normal, oily, dry, sensitive and combination. There’s also problem skin that is usually best treated with prescription skincare products or even antibiotics.
And in spite of the fact that most men consider their skin to be normal, it’s more common for them to have combination skin. This is where the skin is normal to dry in most places, but oily in others, particularly in the T-zone - the forehead, nose and chin area. All skin types need a skincare regime that cleanses, tones and moisturizes.
If you have oily skin, you want to keep it as clean as possible, especially in the T-zone. Twice a day, you want to use a good quality facial wash skincare for men product. You’ll also want to follow with a toner to refresh the skin and tighten the pores. You’ll want to look for one that has an astringent in it to help keep the oiliness away during the day, as well as to remove any excess oil. After that, apply a light moisturizer. If your skin is particularly oily, you may want to skip the moisturizer in the morning and only use it at night.
Normal skin is best cared for by using a facial wash twice a day, followed by a light toner and moisturizer. Just be careful not to use heavy, greasy products. And always avoid products with harsh chemicals. Normal skin doesn’t need as much care as other skin types. Cleansing and light moisturizing should be sufficient to keep normal skin looking healthy and supple.
If you have combination skin, you want to be careful not to use products that will cause it to dry out. You may have to use one type of skincare products on the normal to dry areas and others on the oily places. Again, cleansing is extremely important to keep blackheads and pimples to a minimum. Also, use a light moisturizer designed for men. Women’s moisturizers are likely to be too greasy for men, so stick with men’s products.
For sensitive skin, you want to take special care in purchasing skincare products. Try to buy hypoallergenic skincare products whenever possible. Watch out for products that contain perfumes because many skin allergies are caused by the perfumes or fragrances added to them. And the basic skincare for men is the same as for all types of skin: cleanse, tone, moisturize.
In addition to using skincare products and performing routine skincare daily, you want to watch your diet. And don’t smoke or drink too much. Get plenty of exercise, but if you’re going to be in the sun, be sure to use a sunscreen. Also, remember that sleep is your skin’s best friend. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep a night to keep your skin looking its very best. Sleep really is the best skincare product possible - and best of all, it doesn’t cost a thing (not to mention, you’ll never risk running into your buddies at the checkout to get it!).
