Of all makeup, lipstick seems to be the most written about. Unfortunately though, most treatments of the subject tend to blip right past the 1920s and 1930s – the decades when lipstick gained widespread use and acceptance, and became a multi-million dollar a year industry, despite the economic Depression.

It was in 1920 that Max Factor, a pioneer of Hollywood movie cosmetics, began selling his line of Society Make Up to the public. This ushered in a new era of acceptance for lipstick, and cosmetics in general – even his blatant use of the word “makeup" was then new. Before the decade was out, he had also invented lip gloss (1928) and introduced the first commercial lip brush to the public (1929).

The older generation may well have shuddered, as Dorothy Cocks wrote in Etiquette of Beauty (1927), at the younger generation’s “frank use of lipstick,” but within a short time, few fashionable women would want to be seen without theirs. According to Read My Lips: A Cultural History of Lipstick, a poll of 53,000 households conducted in 1938 (the same year that Congress passed the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, regulating the industry) revealed that 58% had at least 1 lipstick.

Indelibility was the major problem that plagued lipstick manufacturers during this era. Lipsticks had a tendency to turn bluish or purple after application, and made the wearer look ghastly. Almost all lipstick makers claimed their products to be indelible, non-drying, and creamy, but the first truly indelible lipstick would not be created until the end of the 1930s – again with Max Factor, now headed by Max Jr., – leading the way. His Tru-Color Lipstick came on the market in early 1940, but was heavily advertised in 1939.

The cosmetics industry may have expected sales to plummet after the Stock Market crash of 1929 and the subsequent economic downturn. But, just as women of World War II would cling to their lipstick as a sort of “red badge of courage,” so would Depression era women hold on to their lipsticks, if they could. One popular drugstore brand, Tangee, claimed its sales were better than ever. “1931 a year of depression?” read one ad from 1932, “Not for Tangee, the World’s Most Famous Lipstick and Rouge! More Tangee was used in 1930 than in the prosperous days of ’29, and even more last year than ever before!” High end companies like Elizabeth Arden, reported similar increases.

Tube shapes varied by manufacturer. Some were tiny, bullet shaped. Others were long and crayon-like. They often came in a variety of sizes, at equivalent prices. Cases were metal. Early tubes had a sliding lever to raise the product, invented in 1915. This was soon replaced by the swivel technique still used today. A number of compact sets were sold as “trios” of powder, rouge and lipstick, all refillable.

A Word About Lip Shapes
In the late teens, Max Factor created a lip style that came to be called “vampire lips” “rosebud lips” or “bee-stung lips” (depending on the type of character being played) for silent stars like Nita Naldi and Mae Murray. He made the lips this way: he blotted out the actresses’ natural lipline with greasepaint, then dipped his thumb into the lip pomade and made two impressions with it on the upper lip, and one upside down thumb print for the lower lip. The lips were then refined and perfected with a lip brush. He did this because the pomade of the time would melt under the hot studio lights and bleed onto the greasepaint of the actresses’ faces. We’ve used this technique to achieve a perfect, "early 20s lip" shape.

Mae Murray, 1923.

With new advances in film technology and makeup, by the sound era it was no longer necessary to avoid the lip corners and a more “natural” lip shape came to be used. Max Factor created a new lip outline for Joan Crawford, by slightly over-drawing her upper lip and emphasizing the fullness of the lower one. Factor called it “the smear” but it was generally known as the “hunter’s bow” lip. Many actresses and other women imitated this style in the 1930s.

Below: Jeanette MacDonald beautifully demonstrates the “hunter’s bow” lip, 1932.

Colors
As with nail colors, while red dominated, it was not the only choice available. There were also pinks, corals, tawny and rose shades, besides a wide spectrum of reds. In This Way to Beauty (1936), Helena Rubinstein suggested choosing rogue and lipstick colors to harmonize with your costume: with black or brilliant red, she suggested Chinese Red lipstick; with white, Red Geranium; for yellow, Red Poppy; with gray or green, Red Coral lips; for beige or brown, a Terra Coral lipstick; and with blue, purple, or wine red, Red Velvet or Red Raspberry lipstick.

Detail of a black & white ad for Coty’s new lipstick, 1925, from a high-end fashion magazine catering to wealthy women, called Modes & Manners. The 1939 color ad for Coty’s “Flying Colors” shows its newest shade, Magnet Red, “a dashing red, the makeup accent that your fall frock needs.” Other colors that year: Bali, Gitane, Dahlia, and Light.

Lablanche’s subtly advertised lipsticks, also from Modes & Manners, 1925. This was the year Lois Long began writing a column for The New Yorker under the pseudonym “Lipstick.”

Charles of the Ritz' Bonfire red, “A blaze of autumn color for your lips,” 1930. So that explains why our lips are burning!

This 1932 ad for Tangee confused us at first. Who is being quoted here – him? Or her? Oh, it’s him. Well, it was an honest mistake – after all, if she’s wearing a lot of “paint,” he appears to be auditioning for The Mikado. But we think they’re both overeating – he looks ready to punch her, and she says “I could have killed Tom…” Tangee used the tendency of the period’s lipsticks to change color to its advantage – it started out orange in the tube but unlike the others, “deliberately” changed color on application to harmonize with the wearer’s “natural, individual coloring.” It also claimed to stay on all day. Tangee is still available through the Vermont Country Store.

Cutex, primarily a nail enamel manufacturer, introduced the concept of matching lip and nail colors when they began selling lipsticks c.1934-35. Their 1936 colors came in Natural, Coral (warm), Cardinal (tawny) and Ruby (sophisticated).

As we discussed in our Manicures post, Revlon did not enter the lipstick market until 1940. The company began advertising their new lip colors in late 1939, such as this ad from Vogue. Like Cutex, their colors were designed to match nail colors. Those first few colors were: Shy, Windsor, Sun Rose, Bravo, Jueltone, Red Dice, Chilibean, Tringar, and Mahogany.

one last painful hug goodbye
one last passionate kiss and tear stained eyes
you turned and walked away
but your memories were here to stay

your face tattooed to my mind
your love i can no longer find
your words repeat in my head
your the reason for all my tears shed

my souls now hollow
my minds lost in all of its sorrow
I'm now haunted by your ghost
you were what i needed most

the memories of that one last painful night
when i lost this fight
i was blinded by your lies
you told me this love would never die

you held me close
you told me i was the one you wanted most
you said you'd never let these feelings die
every thing you said was just a lie
--------
So what if today we are far apart
U still reside in the hidden corner of my heart
So what if u don’t treat me as a friend any more?
I am learning to smile again; I will be successful for sure,
Whenever I miss u, I just get lost in memories of olden days
I still remember those lovely days, when in ur arms I use to lay

So easily u moved on n now u treat me as stranger
Still i tried to help u out but then u took me as a challenger
Sometimes I feel so hurt that I lock myself in room n loudly I shout
Its u who was wrong, its u who lied, n then its u who have doubts?
My poems were never to blame u, they were just my feeling’s portray
Its u who played with my feeling, then why cant I call ur fake love a betray?

Sometimes I curse my fate, because I met u, because I loved u
My feelings were true, tell me, that’s why am i in blues?
Today, i try to run away from this feeling called love.
Because a heartless person came in my life n acted like a dove,

But the bitter truth is, I am still in love with you
I still wish to spend some moments even if they r few
I cry a lot then try to find u in my tears………….
That crying never gave me pain but brought both of us near
Perhaps unconsciously I am trying to dream of that time
When world will be beautiful, I will be yours n u will be mine
You will be mine……………
You will be mine…………….
You will be mine……………
You will be mine…………….

HOW TO APPLY LIPSTICK AND LIP LINER

There is no doubt that the Lips are the most sensual feature on our face. They play a real important role while communicating with others as they draw others ' attention very easily. Therefore it becomes necessary to give careful attention to them when applying lipstick so that they could get compliments.

While applying Lipstick you should always keep in mind that first you should apply the lip liner and then only the lipstick.

A. Lip Liner
B. Lipstick

Applying Lip Liner First
The lip liner helps you give your lips a neatly defined edge, which decides the shape of your lips. Though the Lip liner is optional but when you are using it, it should be used before the lipstick. The lip liner keeps the color from bleeding and it gives you a guideline for applying your lipstick.

1. You should use a Lip Liner prior to applying the lipstick.

2. You should use the lip liner that is either neutral or matching to the color of the lipstick. Always use a liner that is a shade or two darker than your lipstick, stick with the same tone.

3. You should not use a lip liner, which is darker than the color of your lipstick. Because when the lipstick fades after sometime and the liner does not, you are left with just an outline, which looks odd.

4. To apply the lip liner you should start drawing an outline from the center of your upper lip. And gradually come to each outer corner, following the edge of your natural lip line or the way you want your lips to appear.

5. To make the sharpening easier, before applying the lip liner you can chill the lip pencil in the refrigerator for a few minutes.

Applying The Lipstick

For applying the lipstick in right way you should first apply the lip liner and then only go for the lipstick.

1. Apply the Lip Liner first.

2. Then apply a little moisturizer on your lips. It will not only soften your lips but also help the Lipstick glide on more easily on your lips.

3. A dusting of powder or a bit of foundation beneath lipstick can maximize its staying power. Therefore you should apply a light coat of foundation on your lips. This will act as a base on your lips and also help even out the color of your lipstick.

4. Now it is time to outline the natural edge of your lips, which you could do with a Lip Pencil. But it should not be more than one shade darker than the Lipstick that you are planning to use.

5. At the time of applying the Lipstick you should relax your mouth in such a way that it opens slightly. Stretch your lips and starting at the center of top or bottom, glide color to corners.

6. Now with the help of a Lip Brush apply your Lipstick starting from the center of each lip and gradually working outwards to fill in the Lipstick on your lips. Start with the right side of the lips, upper lip first. Lip Color should be inside the lip liner, not outside the liner.

7. It is great to add gloss after the lipstick. This will help keep your Lip Color strong and the gloss will stay on longer.

If you want a deeper effect of lipstick, then press your lips gently against a tissue in such a way that it does not smudge or remove too much of your Lipstick. And then you should apply another coat of the lipstick.

Insert a finger inside your mouth and withdraw it slowly. Doing so will help you prevent your lipstick from sticking to your teeth and also to remove any excess lipstick from inside your lips.

HOW TO CHOOSE LIPSTICK COLOR

Do you face a lot of confusion before selecting the right color for your lips? If yes, let it not be a problem anymore. Because here are some guidelines to help you pick the most suitable color for your lips. You should select a lip color which best matches with your skin tone as that will be the most correct shade of lipstick for you.

Fair Skin Tone

1. Deep plum reds like soft berry and wine reds with a blue undertone.
2. Avoid reds with an orange undertone.
3. Medium brown with pink undertones or beige lipsticks with a pink undertone.
4. Browns like Mocha browns, and darker brown/pink lipsticks for an evening lip look.
5. Extra pale browns with yellow undertones make fair skin look washed out.
6. Pinks such as light shiny pink lipsticks with blue undertones work well.
7. Pink with a slight gold shimmer also enhances this skin tone very nicely.
8. Try to stay away from hot pink lipstick as it overpowers fair skins.

Medium Skin Tone

1. Deep reds and the Blue-reds brighten medium skin with a yellow undertone.
2. Brown and warm reds will soften and look warm on medium skin.
3. Browns that are very pale can make medium skins look ashy and washed out.
4. Rich caramel shades, medium brown with yellow or pink undertones, and creamy coffee color browns can also be flattering to medium skin tone.
5. Pinks like rich and deep pinks tend to look best on medium skin. Also pinks with brown undertones enhance and flatter medium skins very well.
6. Sheers, creams, and mattes can also be tried using these shades of pink.

Yellowish Skin Tone

1. Go for rich, deep brown reds and deep, dark berry shades.
2. Stay away from orange or reds and pink or red shades.
3. Browns with a red or auburn or mahogany undertone and rich browns that resemble coffee, toffee, and chocolate colors work well with this skin tone.
4. Pinks like deep berries, rich rose, and soft to medium plums with strong yellow undertones are flattering to this skin tone.
5. Avoid pinks that are to cool and too light as these pinks can make complexion look draining.

Brownish Or Black Skin Tone

1. Go for red color with a blue undertone, which are deep and rich. Also, mahogany, and deep plums, and wine reds are worth trying.
2. Avoid orange and pink reds on this skin tone.
3. Almost any shade of brown color such as light browns to a rich, dark, coffee brown suits black skin tone.
4. Pinks like medium and soft sheer pinks, pink in glosses and sheers with a touch of beige can really enhance this skin tone.
5. Berries, deep roses, and plums also flatter this skin tone

LipCare Tips

After you brush your teeth every morning, try using your toothbrush to 'exfoliate' your lips too! It should brush off some dead cells and promote the growth of new ones. Also, do not forget that lip balm! Are your lips chapped and dehydrated? Fix what you already have by first using an old toothbrush and brushing your lips with Vaseline (do this every other day).

Then you need to use Vaseline or your favorite lip balm on your lips every night before you go to bed. Make sure to pile it on at night (do this every night). Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. Remember to wear a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher to protect them. After a few days you'll notice a dramatic difference. Keep this up, and make it an everyday habit.

Try to apply concealer over your entire lip. Then use your favorite lipstick and you'll look prettier and healthier. For best results, use a lip liner before applying lipstick. Some lipstick contain materials which actually make your lips darker after regular use (a high percentage of lead or something). So, use only mild varieties of lipstick, lipliner, pencils and glosses. Drink more water, it really helps to pump up the lips.

Every night before going to bed, apply vaseline petroleum jelly on the lips with your fingers (they come in a small bottle as well) if you sleep with the AC on every night. The next day, use a toothbrush to brush away the leftover vaseline and dead skin on the lips (very effective for cracked lips) after your normal brushing. You will see your lips getting redder and 'more pumped up'.

This also helps if you have recurring problems of cracked lips or peeling skin that stays on your lips (and you tend to bite them away). Vaseline deals with uneven lips and helps in having a healthy smile. Your lipsticks may not be suitable for you. Care for your lips. It does have something to do with metabolism. Dark lips may be due to an unhealthy diet and unsuitable lipsticks.

You have to be careful when choosing a brand that is suitable for you. Stop it immediately when you notice changes with your natural lip colour. As for a healthy diet, try to eat more fruits and avoid caffeine and smoking. Another method that can help is to drink more red dates water. Put about 6 dates in a cup and pour hot water on it. Wait about 1/2 hr or 45 minutes before you drink it.

It is convenient, easy to prepare and good for your blood circulation. Try it a few times a week. Apply a thin layer of toothpaste to your lips before you go to sleep. Your lips in the morning will be redder and cleaner. Your lip colour might have to do with what you eat because it is vital to have a balanced diet. If you don't have a balanced diet, then eat more healthy food.

MAKE YOUR LIPS LOOK MORE BALANCED

Who in this world does not wish for that perfect shape of the lips? But each one of us is not that lucky to have them and even slight imperfections of our lips cause great distress to us. Never mind, this little problem could be solved very easily. What you need to do is just know the right way to create great-looking lips in no time. Here we are with the tips to help you give your lips that balanced and beautiful shape.

Big Lips: For the big lips you should use muted colors such as purples, browns and bronzes.

Small Lips:

* In case of small lips in order to balance the uneven shape of lips you should use a light shade of lipstick.
* To make your lips look fuller, line the lips with a lip pencil and then blend the edges with a sponge applicator.
* If you want to make lips appear smaller, use concealer over natural lip line. Line just inside natural lip line. Fill in new lip shape with lipstick.

Thin Lips:

* You should draw lip outline with a neutral-colored lip pencil slightly beyond the lip area. Then only apply the lipstick.
* You should apply a little white shadow on center of the lips over lipstick and then spread slightly.
* You should avoid applying very dark shades of lipstick as it makes the lips look even thinner.
* If one lip is thinner and you want to make lips appear balanced, outline thinner lip just outside natural lip line.

Fuller Lips:

* For the fuller lips you should spotlight lip-gloss right in the center of your lips.
* The fuller lips really do not need lip liner. But if you like to have those looks then soften edge with your finger.
* The fuller lips should not wear any lip color that is too glossy or shiny.
* If you want to make lips appear fuller outline lips just outside natural lip line. Fill in lips with pencil lipstick.
* Line fuller lips along natural lip line. Fill in new lip shape with lipstick.

Luscious Lips

* Give the finishing touch to your makeup with luscious, brightly colored lips.
* Why to hesitate for selecting the shades such as red, pink, orange and even silver to apply on your lips.
* Shine and shimmer your lips with various glosses in addition to some wild color.
* You should keep your stick on your lips by applying gloss over them or using long-lasting lipsticks.
* You should go light on eye makeup to attract attention to your wild lips
